Wholesale clubs vs. Superstores — Who's in the lead? According to our latest data, the winner is... Wholesale chains 🛒 – which receive about 20% of all visits to Walmart, Target, Costco Wholesale, Sam’s Club (owned by Walmart), and BJ’s Wholesale Club –generally outperformed classic superstore banners during the first four months of the year. Q1 2024 visits to Costco Wholesale, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s Wholesale Club up 8.9%, 6.1%, and 5.6%, respectively, on a YoY basis. Visits to Target and Walmart also increased in Q1 2024 (3.5% and 3.9% YoY), respectively. Walmart, by far the largest retailer in the space - receiving over 60% of all visits to Target, Walmart, Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s - is particularly strong in the South and seems to still have room to grow, especially in the Midwest and Northeast. Overall, wholesale club lead visit growth, but classic superstores maintain overall visit edge. As budget-strapped consumers continue looking for bargains, legacy retail giant Walmart may still have room to grow even larger in 2024. Catch the full insights in our latest report. Formula 1's skyrocketing success in the U.S. sends a clear message. Retailers and brands take note ✍️ The fusion of sports and content, especially through platforms like Netflix, has been pivotal in driving F1's unprecedented surge in popularity across the States. This has opened up a goldmine for collaborations between brands, licensees, and race events, tapping into a rapidly growing market. While the growth of the event itself is impressive, the change in visitor demographics, with a significant increase in young professionals and urban singles, provides an even more striking opportunity for American retailers and brands. This shift, likely influenced by the Netflix docuseries and the rise of influencer marketing around races, underscores a trend towards younger and wealthier audiences. For brands eyeing the preferences of these affluent, younger consumers, Formula 1's ascent in the U.S. holds valuable insights to unlock. This sector is making waves felt across industries far and wide. Which raises the question: where exactly is the current strength of C-Stores coming from? Here's what our latest white paper reveals: ⓵ Between April 2023 and March 2024, C-Stores experienced consistent year-over-year visit growth, generally outpacing the overall retail sector. ⓶ Chains like Casey’s, Maverik, Buc-ee’s, and Rutter’s are redefining the C-Store space, transforming convenience stores into prime destinations. Over the past year, the average number of visits to the locations of these four chains grew year-over-year, outperforming the industry average. ⓷ Casey’s, known for its breakfast and pizza offerings, and Maverik, which offers a popular breakfast burrito, have positioned themselves as breakfast spots. Both chains attract higher-than-average shares of morning visitors, and Casey’s and Maverik also draw more fast-food pizza and burrito aficionados, respectively, compared to the average C-Store. ⓸ Buc-ee’s and Rutter’s are proving that bigger can be better. Buc-ee’s has emerged as a prime tourist attraction for families and weekend visitors, partly due to its large locations. Rutter’s is increasing visits and dwell time by embracing large-store formats.
