Did you know that January is Braille Literacy Month? Did you know that today, January 4th, is World Braille Day? Did you know that Louis Braille invented the system 200 hundred years ago? Did you know Braille literacy is directly linked to higher academic success rates and better employment outcomes for blind and low-vision adults? If you’ve read this far, you know all that now, and knowing is half the battle. Every day, but especially on this day, I’m super proud to work for Perkins School for the Blind with all we have done, currently do, and will do to further braille literacy.

It's a common misconception that accessibility improvements only benefit a small minority. In reality, accessibility enhancements can help everyone, a phenomenon known as the "curb cut effect." Susan and I had the privilege to visit the prestigious Perkins School for the Blind in Boston – the first blind school in the USA established in 1832. We were warmly welcomed by the wonderful staff and many students who are blind, deafblind and with multiple disabilities. It was remarkable to see the engagement and excitement when we introduced our shampoo, conditioner and body wash bottles with tactile symbols. Students for the first time, were able to identify products independently by touch using our Tactile System. We were also taken on a historic tour, where we learned about Laura Bridgman who was the first deafblind person in the US able to read and write. I was delighted to feel the famous large tactile globe from the Helen Keller era in the grand historic hall. It was a great day for accessibility touching and improving lives. Today we are celebrating Global Accessibility Awareness Day. Leave a comment to let us know how you're celebrating. We started the celebration early with an accessibility lab at MIT Sloan School of Management. The Office of Communications partnered with Perkins Access to bring assistive technologies and interactive activities to MIT in order to promote inclusivity and empower their community to consider how they can impact digital accessibility. We raised awareness around questions like: Have you ever wondered what poorly chosen color contrast looks like for users with visual impairments? Did you know that the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has historical ties to MIT? Are you curious about learning how AI is being used to help solve accessibility challenges? Global Accessibility Awareness Day is all about understanding the barriers that people with disabilities encounter, while learning about potential solutions that YOU can use immediately.
